This research was executed to furnish basic data of decoction throw survey how herb clinics operated in Taegu: are employing decoction and the reason why they adapt decoction methods.
Most of them decocted by using specially-manufactured decoction machines. They adjusted water volume to the quantity of oriental medicinal plants. Regulation of fire was achieved by decoction machines.
Decocting time varied with the intended efficacy of _ a remedy. For example, decocting time for making medicines for relieving exterior syndrome differ from restoratives or laxatives. The reason why decocting time varied with -the remedy is due to different effects on treatment. They decocted most of herbs for 2 or 3 hours, but especially they decocted medicine for relieving exterior syndrome for 1 or 2 hours. Usage of pottery or stainless steel bucket results in much more frequent regulation of decocting time than usage of decoction machines.
A 86.7% herb clinics operated in Taegu has done processing of oriental medicinal plants because they--expect different effect on treatment. Recently-opened clinics were willing to take processing of oriental medicinal plants. The most widely adapted processing methods are : parching, boiling, steaming, refining powder with water, roasting in -ashes.
Decocting methods have been widely adapted in the order of stirring, taking medicine following its infusion, being decocted first, dissolution, being decocted later, being decocted separately. However, the above-mentioned decocting methods have been seldom used because of inconvenience. Being decocted first frequency showed differently according to usage of receptacles such; a`s decdction´"machines, pottery, stainless steel bucket. Being decocted later frequency is ´largely dependent on how long ago the oriental medical doctor graduated from ´college. The- later he or she graduated from school, the more he or she preferred being decocted later.
